Getting started

Do I need a piano keyboard?

It's best with one, but not required. You can play on the on-screen keyboard to try everything out. To really learn, we recommend any MIDI keyboard.

What keyboards work?

Any standard MIDI keyboard:

• USB: connect it with Apple's Lightning-to-USB or USB-C adapter, or a powered USB hub.
• Bluetooth (BLE MIDI): pair it *inside the app* (Settings → connect your keyboard). Note: Bluetooth MIDI keyboards pair through the app, not through the iOS Settings app.

My Bluetooth keyboard won't pair.

Use the pairing screen inside Motif Studio, not iOS Settings. That is how Bluetooth MIDI works on iPhone and iPad. Make sure the keyboard is on, in range, and not already connected to another device.

I hear no sound.

• Check your device isn't muted and the volume is up.
• If you routed audio to your keyboard in Settings, make sure the keyboard's own volume is up.
• Try toggling the audio route in Settings.

Learning & practice

Where do I start?

Open the app and follow the guided first lesson. It gets a complete beginner playing in a few minutes. Then work down the song list, which is ordered from easiest to hardest.

What do the lit keys and numbers mean?

The glowing key is the next note to play; the number on it is the suggested finger (1 = thumb … 5 = pinky). A key that blinks means the same note is played again (rather than held).

Can I use my own music?

Yes:

• Import MIDI songs from Files.
• Play by Chords: paste a chord progression and play it with a backing band.

How does the streak work?

It rewards consistency gently. Practice most days and it grows, with a one-day grace so a single missed day doesn't wipe it out. No shaming, ever.

Troubleshooting

The home-screen widget isn't updating.

Open the app and practice once. The widget updates after your next session and refreshes daily.
