Terms of Use

Last updated 27 September 2026

These terms cover Motif Studio, the iPhone and iPad app, and this website. They are written to be read, not to be survived. If something here is unclear, ask us and we will explain it plainly.

The short version

The app is free to download. One optional purchase unlocks the rest of it, once, permanently. Your practice, your recordings and anything you import stay on your device. We do not have an account system, so there is nothing for us to suspend, and nothing of yours for us to hold.

The licence

Motif Studio is licensed, not sold, and your licence to use it is Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which applies to every app distributed on the App Store that does not supply its own. That document is the licence; this page explains, in ordinary words, how we intend the app to work and what you can expect from us. Where the two ever disagree about the licence itself, Apple's document governs.

What the purchase includes

Motif Studio Pro is a one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase. There is no subscription and no renewal. It unlocks the full song library, practice on the songs you import, the rest of Chord Skills, the rest of Play by Chords together with pasting your own progressions, the Recording Studio's metronome, MIDI export and send-to-Songbook, and additional player profiles.

It is tied to your Apple Account, not to a device. Reinstall the app, or install it on another device signed in to the same Apple Account, and Restore Purchase in Settings brings it back at no charge.

We may add to the app over time. Anything we add to the paid tier is included — that is what "yours forever" means. If we ever build something substantial enough to be sold separately, it will be offered separately and clearly, and it will not remove anything you already have.

Payment and refunds

Apple handles the purchase. We never see your payment details, and we receive no personal information about you from the transaction. Because Apple is the seller, refunds are requested from Apple, not from us, at reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue a refund ourselves even when we would like to. If a purchase goes wrong, write to us anyway — we will help you work out what happened.

Prices are set per region by Apple and can change. A change never affects a purchase already made.

Your music and your recordings

Anything you bring into the app or make with it is yours. Recordings you make in the Recording Studio, MIDI files you import, and chord progressions you paste stay on your device; we have no server and no copy. You decide entirely whether to share any of it.

You are responsible for having the right to use the files you import. The app will happily open any MIDI file you give it, and it has no way to know where a file came from. Importing music you do not have the right to use is your call and your responsibility, not ours — and note that a great deal of music is still in copyright even when a MIDI file of it is freely downloadable.

What we include, and under what terms

The pieces bundled with the app are public-domain compositions, sequenced and arranged in house. The audio is produced by two bundled soundfonts used under licence — the Grand Piano soundfont (Zenph Studios / FreePats, Creative Commons Attribution 3.0, modified for this app) and GeneralUser GS by S. Christian Collins. Both are credited in full on our credits page and inside the app under Settings → Credits.

The app itself, its artwork, its arrangements and its text remain ours. Using the app does not transfer any of that to you, and it is not yours to redistribute or to build a competing product from.

Fair use of the app

There is little to say here, because there is nothing to abuse: no accounts, no messaging, no shared content, no leaderboards. Please do not attempt to circumvent the purchase, redistribute the app or its bundled content, or reverse engineer it beyond what the law expressly permits.

What we do not promise

The app is provided as it is. We have tested it on real hardware and we fix what we find, but we cannot promise it is free of defects, that it will work with every MIDI keyboard ever made, or that it will never interrupt a practice session. It is a practice tool, not a teacher, a qualification, or a guarantee that you will learn the piano — that last part is up to you, and it is meant to be.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from using the app. Nothing here limits any right you have that cannot be limited, and consumer protection law in your country may give you rights that override anything on this page. Where it does, it wins.

Children

The app is suitable for all ages and collects nothing from anyone, including children. If a child uses it, purchases are still made through the Apple Account that set up the device — use Apple's Screen Time and Ask to Buy controls if you want a purchase to need your approval.

Changes

If these terms change we will update this page and the date above. We will not change them retroactively to take away something you have already bought.
